Meow Wolf cover story

While at Albuquerque Business First, the newsroom pitched the idea of a cover story profiling Meow Wolf, a growing arts collective based in Santa Fe that was in the verge of raising millions of dollars to develop new art installations in Denver and Las Vegas.

We thought this story was important for our business audience. We storyboarded our cover story and assigned everyone in the newsroom assignments for the project. My main responsibility was project manager, ensuring everyone was meeting deadlines and to copyedit reporters’ stories.

About a week into the project, we learned that Meow Wolf had declined to participate in the story. We had to make a decision to scrap the cover story or to continue without our main subject. We got creative and started investigating alternative sources and documents. We decided we had enough to continue to tell the story.

We pulled public documents, SEC filings and spoke with investors and others in the art industry and we pulled off telling an informative and important story. We learned it was important to plan but be open to pivoting when hitting roadblocks. What resulted was a cover story that we were proud of as a newsroom.
